Open Heavens Devotional: Mountain Movers – Tuesday 12th March 2019

Topic: Mountain Movers

Memorise: “5 What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back? 6 Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?”- Psalm 114:5-6

Read: Matthew 17:14-20 (KJV)

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.

18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Bible in One Year: Romans 14-16, Isaiah 60:19-61:11

From our Lord’s message in today’s Bible text, we learn that mountain symbolizes the challenges of life. The good news is that Jesus also assures us in this teaching that we can be mountain movers, even if our faith is as small as a mustard seed. In the story captured in today’s reading, the demons of insanity constituted not only a nuisance to the life of a young man and his father, they were also a source of embarrassment to the disciples of Jesus Christ, as they refused to leave the boy after the disciples had commanded them to. Why were the disciples not able to cast these demons out? Jesus explained that it was because of their unbelief? This is food for thought for those of us who call ourselves men and women of faith. Before this event, the disciples might have felt that they had faith, but when their faith was put to test, they failed. One can safely assume that before the disciples embarked on trying to deliver the young man of these demons; they must have believed that God was able to use them to carry out this deed. In the same way, one would assume that before people leave their homes for a church programme, they must possess a level of faith to receive from God. However, experience has shown that such assumptions are not always valid. Many people are very religious but don’t have faith at all.

To be a mover of mountains, you must possess the right kind of faith. Beloved, what kind of faith do you have? Is it living or dead faith? it is not the size of faith that matters; what matters is whether the faith is alive or not. Before confronting a mountain, you need to check if you have the right kind of faith that can move mountains. An example of someone with mountain-moving faith is the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:22-28. She came to Jesus so that her daughter could be delivered of the evil spirit that troubled her. In spite of all the discouraging obstacles thrown her way, she convinced herself that the only solution to her challenges lay with Jesus Christ, and so she would not let Him go. The result of her tenacity is clearly seen in Matthew 15:28, which says:

“Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.”

Some people seem to have alternatives to the miracle-working Jesus, and so, after they have tried Him once or twice and things seem not to be working, they go looking for a solution elsewhere. Mountain movers tarry long with the Master until their petition is granted. I join my faith with yours and decree that those intimidating mountains in your life are removed today in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point:

Father, please make the mountain of problems confronting me today to become a plain in Jesus’ Name.

Topic: Brotherly Love

Memorise: “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;”- Romans 12:10

Read: 1 John 4:7-11 (KJV)

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Bible in One Year: Romans 11-13, Isaiah 60:1-18

In Song of Solomon 8:7, love is described as being so strong that many waters cannot quench it. It is also described as having more worth than all of one’s possessions because it satisfies like nothing else can. How true the word of God is! Love is the greatest antidote against evil tendencies because the Bible declares that God is love (1 John 4:8). There is no evil in God, and so there cannot be evil in love. However, love is not the misconception the world has taken it to be. The devil has deceived the world into misconstruing lust as love. Love is a decision that originates from the expression of God nature. Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us two dimension of love: love towards God and love towards fellow human beings (Matthew 22:37-40). The Holy spirit sheds more light on the link between these two aspects of love, saying in 1 John 4:20:

“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”

In order words, we can only express our love to God through those who are created in His image. Indeed, the only way to prove that you know God is to demonstrate His kind of love to others. God’s kind of love is that which gives to those who did not deserve it. On the contrary, many children of God are selective of those they show love to. They love those who love them and hate those who hate them! Whereas Jesus Christ says in Luke 6:32-33:

“32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.”

The implication of these words is that if God requires us to love even our enemies, He expects us to love our fellow brethren in Christ even more. As a matter of fact, God places a higher premium on the task of showing love towards the brethren (Galatians 6:10).

Beloved, if you find it difficult to love people, it is probably because you have not experienced the love that the Father bestowed upon us when He forgave us our sins and declared us to be His children (1 John 3:1). If that is the case with you, I encourage you to give your life to Christ today and embrace His divine love. You might also find it difficult to love people if many people have wronged you in the past. In any case, you need to open up your heart for the Holy Spirit to work on you so that you can begin to manifest His fruit of love. May the Almighty God give you the capacity to love, particularly those of the household of faith, in Jesus’ Name.

Open Heaven 11 March 2019 Monday Action Point:
Demonstrate the love of God to someone that God ministers to your heart is in need of it today.

Hymn 5: Let Others See Jesus In You.
1.While passing thro’ this world of sin,
and others your life shall view,
Be clean and pure without, within;
Let others see Jesus in you.

Let others see Jesus in you,
Let others see Jesus in you.
Keep telling the story, be faithful and true;
Let others see Jesus in you.

2. Your life’s a book before their eyes,
They’re reading it thro’ and thro’
Say, does it point them to the skis,
Do others see Jesus in you?

3. Then live for Christ both day and night,
Be faithful, be brave and true,
and lead the lost to life and Christ.
Let others see Jesus in you.

TOPIC: Victory without a fight

MEMORISE: Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Romans 12:19

READ: 2 Chronicles 20:22-27

22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.

25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.

26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.

27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

There is a reason and a great blessing for living life with the attitude that the Holy Spirit recommends in today’s memory verse. Without a doubt, victory won after tough fight is sweet.

The Israelites experienced this when they encountered the Amalekites in Exodus 17:8-15. The Amalekites waged war against the Israelites and Moses commission Joshua to fight them, but not without the help of the Lord of Hosts.

While Joshua led the physical fight, Moses, assisted by Aaron and Hur, handled the spiritual fight in prayers. In the end, the battle was won to the glory of God. As sweet as this victory was, there is another type of victory that is even sweeter – victory obtained without a fight!

Victory in which the victor did not need to fight can only happen when God is involved. A great example is found in today’s Bible reading when three powerful kings gathered against King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah.

A Levite named Jahaziel, moved by the Holy Spirit told the people that they need not fight in the battle ahead, because the battle was not theirs but God’s (2 Chronicles 20:14-17). In this instance, the Lord Himself was set to do battle with the enemies of His people.

The good news is that what Jehoshaphat and his people experienced is still possible in the life of God’s children today. However, for this to happen there is one factor that must be in place, which Jehoshaphat proclaimed in 2 Chronicles 20:20, saying:

“Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.”

Beloved, if you want victory without a fight, you must believe that God is more than able to fight your battles for you and demonstrate this faith by letting Him take charge of your battles. Some of us insist on fighting for ourselves and are yet defeated on a daily basis.

Some people asked me why I don’t fight those who are maliciously working against me. I told them that I have no strength of my own to fight, and so I have handed over to God. Sometimes when God deals with such people, I end up begging Him to have mercy on them.

Vengeance is God’s prerogative, and we must not usurp His divine will if we would make Him happy. As the Lord of Hosts, He specializes in fighting the most terrible of battles. His faithfulness will not allow Him to renege on His promise to fight on your behalf.

So, trust Him for the victory that you so desire over the enemies of your destiny today. You will obtain victory without a fight as the Lord goes to battle for you.

Father, please fight the battles of my life for me today, and give me rest all around.

Topic: Are you in the wrong place?

MEMORISE: And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. Genesis 19:28

READ: Genesis 13:7-13

7And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORDexceedingly.

Genesis 19:27-30

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

It is a deadly thing for a person to be in the wrong place at any point in time, and this includes being among the wrong people.

This has led to many unpleasant experiences that have caused irreparable harm to people, even leading to their death. It is therefore not surprising that the Bible says in Psalm 1:1:

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

How great the wisdom of our God is! The wisdom further says to us in 2 Corinthians 6:16-17:

“And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

Some children of God have found themselves in the wrong places because of their search for so-called “greener pasture”. Te story of Elimelech in the book of Ruth is a sad example of someone who found himself in a wrong place while seeking greener pasture. Click Here To Read – Open Heavens 8 March 2019

Because of a famine, he left Bethlehem-Judah in search of a mean of livelihood in the land of Moab, and he suffered immeasurable loss for it (Ruth 1:1-7). He lost his life and his linage was almost wiped out.

Today’s Bible tells the similar unfortunate story of how Lot chose a place that seemed good for his livestock farming activities, only to later find out that it was the wrong place to dwell in. lot chose to dwell in the land of wicked people because he loved the prosperity of the wicked. Read – Daily Declarations For 8th March 2019

How wrong he was to live among wicked people who were marked out for destruction. Whoever chooses to dwell among the wicked will likely suffer the same fate as the wicked. The Lord decided to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because their grievous sins had become too great in His sight. Click Here To Read – Prayer Points For Today’s Open Heavens 8 March 2019

If not for Abraham, Lot would have been destroyed along with them. Nevertheless, his wife and all his savings were lost in one day. Imagine the regret and agony he must have felt as Sodom and Gomorrah burnt like a furnace.

That is what the cost of being in the wrong place looks like. May you never experience the agony of being in an ungodly environment in Jesus Name.

ACTION POINT: Who are those you share your daily life with? Seek and work towards mingling with people who fear the Lord. As much as it lies within your power, do not dwell in the same habitation with the wicked.

1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Memorise: “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”- Matthew 28:6

Read: Matthew 28:1-6 (KJV)

1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Bible in One Year: Romans 4-6, Isaiah 57

The fundamental event upon which Christianity is based is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. To this end, 1 Corinthians 15:17 says,

“And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”

When we confess that we are born again, we are saying that we have died with Christ and have been raised back to life with Him, having a new form of life that is no longer subject to death, just like our Master. Speaking about this new life, the Master says in Revelation 1:18:

“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

In Romans 6:3-4, the Holy Spirit sheds more light on the new life we possess through Christ’s resurrection, saying:

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

While Christ’s life on earth was glorious and His death upon the cross cannot be trivialized, what is most significant is the fact that He rose from the dead to die no more. This is what gives life to our faith and makes Christianity unique. I pray that God will give you a full revelation of this truth in your Spirit.

In today’s Bible reading, it is interesting to note that just as angelic beings announced the birth of Jesus, they also announced His triumphant resurrection (Luke 2:8-14). Let’s take a closer look at the words of their declaration at His resurrection in Matthew 28:5, they said:

“…Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.”

From these words, you should note that it is possible for angels to know the intent of your heart, and that when you seek Jesus with all your heart, someone greater than angels, in the person of the Holy Spirit is ready to guide you to Him. If you truly seek the risen Lord today, God will spare no expense to reveal Him to you. Furthermore, in Luke 24:5, we are told that the angels asked the women who sought the risen Lord:

“…Why seek ye the living among the dead?”

Those seeking Jesus through religions whose founders are dead should learn from these words that they cannot find Him there. Some people even believe that Jesus is in every religion, but nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus Christ is risen, and whoever believes in Him will also partake of the eternal life in him. Have you received this new life?

Prayer Point:

Father, let Your power of resurrection quicken my mortal body today for greater exploits for You.

Hymn 9:

In Christ Alone

1.In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

2.In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

3.There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4.No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Matthew 27:46

The above verse of scripture vividly captures what spiritual separation is and the agony that accompanies it.

The Lord Jesus Christ experienced it on the cross of Calvary on behalf all mankind, when He carried the sins of the entire world upon Himself, and the Father turned His face away from Him for the first and only time.

My prayer for everyone who is spiritually separated from God is that their eyes of understanding will be opened to see their pitiable state, and that they will realise the agony that awaits them in eternity if they do not reconcile with God.

Sin is the root cause of spiritual separation. The reason is that the Almighty God cannot look at or interact with sin (Habakkuk 1:13).

If you are living a life of sin, you are spiritually separated from Him. Genesis chapter 3 narrates to us how the first man and woman experienced spiritual separation.

After they sinned, they became empty and naked. They felt so worthless that even when God tried to reach out to them, they were too ashamed to show up. A sense of guilt and self-condemnation overwhelmed their hearts.

We thank God that today there is a remedy for spiritual separation: the Blood of Jesus (Colossians 1:19-22). However, there is an eternal spiritual separation that is coming for which there is no remedy; the Bible refers to this as the second death.

Today’s memory verse tells us some of those who will partake in this terrible experience, and the first of these is the fearful.Proverbs 29:25 says,

“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.”

Saul, the first king of Israel, lost his throne because of the fear of man. Just like King Saul, many leaders have lost their God-given leadership position because of the fear of men. Read Open Heavens 4th January 2018

The unbelieving are next on that list. Unbelief was the bedrock of Adam and Eve’s disobedience. Other practices such as lying, murder, adultery, incest, homosexuality, as well as witchcraft and sorcery, are the pathway to external spiritual separation.

Beloved, spiritual separation from one’s Maker brings about untold agony and frustration because without God, you can do nothing (John 15:5). If you are in the state of spiritual separation today, close the gap between you and your Maker through genuine repentance and by applying the Blood of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
